BAYERN MUNICH

FC Bayern München may not have been able to clinch the title tonight but that did not stop them storming to a 9-2 win against Hamburger SV, their fourth highest ever Bundesliga victory, and  20 points clear of Borussia Dortmund seven games left. Claudio Pizarro, who was in the starting XI for the third time, scored his first four league goals this season, the third one with his heel after a brilliant assist by Arjen Robben, who himself now has four goals in his last four Bundesliga games.

For Pizarro it was the first time he has been on target four times in one Bundesliga game and the striker is only the second player in the Bundesliga history to be involved in six goals (scored four, two assists). It was Bayern's 13th win in 14 games and their tenth league victory in a row, the best ever start to a calendar year in the German top division

XAVI ON PSG TRIP

xavi and alba back for PSG trip of barca.

Madrid: Barcelona's Xavi and Jordi Alba have both recovered from hamstring strains and were included in their squad on Sunday for the trip to play Paris St Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The duo returned injured from international duty with Spain - Alba after the World Cup qualifying draw with Finland a week ago, and Xavi after helping the world champions to get a 1-0 win away to France.

They were left out of the leaders' squad for their 2-2 draw away to Celta Vigo in La Liga on Saturday.

Coach Tito Vilanova took charge of Sunday's training session as he steadily works his way back into the job after two months in New York receiving cancer treatment.

MESSI MISSED THE CHANCE

Captain Lionel Messi missed an easy chance near the end
as his Argentina team had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier played at high altitude on Tuesday.

The third draw in a row between the two teams kept Argentina top of the South American group with 24 points from 11 matches. Bolivia have nine points from the same number of games.

The former world champions have now gone four games without a victory against Bolivia since being crushed 6-1 on their previous visit to the Hernando Siles stadium, nearly 4,000 metres above sea level.

With five minutes remaining Messi had an opportunity to win the match for Argentina, stealing the ball from a defender and bearing down on goal with only Sergio Galarza to beat but the goalkeeper blocked his attempt to thread the ball between his legs.

LUCAS AGAINST BARCILONA

About moving to europe lucas speaks to champio how leonardo conviced him to join paris saint-germany fc and hope to emulate compatriot rai against fc barcilona

Lucas has been at Paris Saint-Germain FC for only three months but he has already made a big impression and hopes to summon the spirit of Brazilian compatriot Raí when Carlo Ancelotti's men host FC Barcelona on Tuesday.

In March 1995 a goal from playmaker Raí set up perhaps PSG's finest hour on the UEFA Champions League stage. Having escaped the Camp Nou cauldron with a 1-1 quarter-final draw – in front of more than 100,000 – the French title holders' hard work looked like going unrewarded when they trailed in the Paris return leg 18 minutes from time. Step forward Raí, whose headed equaliser prised open the door to the last four, Vincent Guérin subsequently taking them through as 3-2 aggregate winners.

London: Manchester United edged closer to their 20th league title when a Titus Bramble own goal gave them a 1-0 win at Sunderland on Saturday to keep them 15 points clear of Manchester City with eight Premier League games to go.

City, whose manager Roberto Mancini conceded on Thursday that their hopes of retaining the title were over, beat visiting strugglers Newcastle United 4-0 with goals from Carlos Tevez, David Silva, Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure.

With United's match having kicked off earlier on Saturday, City took the field at the Etihad Stadium 18 points behind their rivals who set a top-flight record of 25 wins from their opening 30 matches. United have 77 points with City second on 62.

With United and City likely to take the top two spots, the race for the remaining two Champions League places hotted up with Tottenham Hotspur bouncing back from successive league defeats by winning 2-1 at Swansea City to leapfrog Chelsea into third place after their London rivals lost 2-1 at Southampton.

MESSI`S NEW RECORD

This goal was messi`s 43rd goal of the campaign and he also secured another record for the world player of the year

Madrid: Lionel Messi notched up another goal-scoring record on Saturday but Barcelona's cruise towards a 22nd title was halted when Borja Oubina hit a late equaliser which handed Celta Vigo a deserved 2-2 draw.

The visitors were without a number of first-team regulars and were punished for a slow start when Natxo Insa prodded home from close range to put Celta in front seven minutes before half-time.

The lead only lasted five minutes though as Messi released Cristian Tello to curl home a fine equaliser and the roles were reversed 18 minutes from time when Tello cut the ball back for Messi to drill low into the net.

The goal was Messi's 43rd league goal of the campaign and also secured another record for the World Player of the Year.

REAL MADRID

Real Madrid failed to extend their 7-games winning streak and dropped another two points in an away fixture in La Liga. José Mourinho has set his priorities for the UEFA Champions League a long time ago and is trusting on his players' capabilities to turn their competitiveness switch on and off, as the circumstances demand for it. This Saturday night, most of the team had clearly turned that switch off and when that happens, the Merengues usually struggle to get the win, regardless of the opponent they have ahead...

Zaragoza started the game with a clear intention of making a statement as early as possible. Contrarily to the Merengues, the league continues being the home side's top priority, a fact that normally dictates a completely different attitude and mindset, which ends up making all the difference on the pitch.

FERDINAND SHOCKED

Rio Ferdinand is shocked by the allegation England fans sang racist songs about him and his brother Anton during the 8-0 World Cup qualifying victory in San Marino, the Manchester United defender said on Friday.

Rio and Anton, who is on loan from Queens Park Rangers to Turkish club Bursaspor, were allegedly targeted by England supporters in the game in San Marino last Friday.

Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) have contacted world soccer's ruling body FIFA about the complaints and the Football Association is awaiting official notification of the incident which could lead to England being forced to play behind closed doors.

You expect and accept banter from fans on the terraces as it's part of what makes the game great but racism is not banter...and from your own fans? WOW," the 34-year-old Rio said on his Twitter account.

TITLE GLORY FOR GRANTED

Nemanjia vidic insist the batter memories of last season`s callapse i the title race will syop manchister united taking anything for granted as they look to regain the premier league crown

Alex Ferguson's team gifted the title to Manchester City after squandering an eight-point lead in the space of four matches at the end of last season and the pain of that meltdown is still felt at Old Trafford.

After rupturing his cruciate ligaments in December 2011, Vidic was a frustrated bystander when United went to Sunderland on the last day of the season.

United won 1-0 and briefly thought they were champions as news filtered through from Eastlands that City were losing 2-1 to QPR, but Roberto Mancini's team scored twice in stoppage-time to snatch the title on goal difference.

Vincent Kompany

Manchester: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has criticised captain Vincent Kompany after he ignored advice from the club over the management of his comeback from injury.

The Belgium defender has not played for the reigning Premier League champions City since damaging a calf muscle in January.

But the influential centre-back figured in a World Cup qualifying match this week, much to the annoyance of his club manager.

If Kompany suffers no adverse reaction to his appearance in the 1-0 win against Macedonia, he will lead out his City team-mates for the first time in two months against Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

But Mancini, who has conceded the title to runaway leaders Manchester United, made it clear he was not happy with his skipper.

messi`s new record

Barcelona: Lionel Messi could add another record to his already staggering list of achievements if he scores for Barcelona on their visit to play relegation staring Celta Vigo Saturday evening.

Messi scored in Barca's last 18 league matches, a feat unsurpassed in the Spanish BBVA Primera Liga and will make it 19 if he scores in the Balaidos Stadium against the side that currently sits second from bottom of the table.

That would mean he has scored in every game for an entire half season and, not only that, it would mean he has scored against every team in the league, given that Celta is the only side he has failed to find the net against, Xinhua reports.

Barcelona received excellent news Tuesday when coach Tito Vilanova returned from New York after two months in the U.S. undergoing cancer treatment and Vilanova has work to do ahead of Saturday's game.

Celta coach, Abel Resino may not be wrong when he says that despite the absence of top scorer and star striker, Iago Aspes through suspension, it is the best moment to play Barcelona as the league leaders have players missing through injury and others who have returned tired following the week's international matches.

Messi himself played a tough game at altitude in Bolivia Tuesday along with Javier Mascherano and actually vomited at halftime in the game as a result of the effects of altitude in La Paz.

casillas left real madrid

Madrid: Real Madrid have left out goalkeeper and former captain Iker Casillas for Saturday's Primera Liga clash against Zaragoza.
Casillas has been back in full training for a week after recovering from a broken bone in his left hand, reports Xinhua.
Casillas had been expected to be included in the squad with the big question whether or not he would go into the first team ahead of Diego Lopez, who was bought from Sevilla in January. Lopez was brought in as a cover for injured Casillas.
"He (Casillas) was passed fit a week ago but he has not been passed as fit to compete. That is why he has not been called up," said Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka.

ZALTAN IBRAHIMOVIC

PSG, meanwhile, have been buoyed by the news that talisman Zlatan Ibrahimović's suspension has been reduced. Prolific in his debut campaign for the Parisian outfit, could the Swedish international have a significant say against his former club? PSG, unbeaten at home in Europe for more than six years, will be hopeful of establishing a first-leg foothold in the tie.

EXPERIANCE UEFA

lionel messi

"This is the Barça we and our fans want every game," Lionel Messi told UEFA.com after FC Barcelona's 4-0 win against AC Milan, as David Villa reflected on more "magic moments".

A UEFA Champions League performance full of confidence, brio and delightful goals put an end to FC Barcelona's recent travails – a sight which delighted their fans and Jordi Roura's players. "Everything came off perfectly," as far as Lionel Messi was concerned.

Lionel Messi, Barcelona forward
we are very lucky to get a night like that, but to remove that result in Milan. Everything got perfectly. I think our fans knew just how we were going to respond and we, the players, knew the crucial thing was to re-establish our way of playing. We did it. From the fifth minute when we got that important first goal, we just went after Milan in every way. We wanted that opening goal as soon as possible to cut the deficit and to make the fans feel it was going to happen. It was lightning quick movement of the ball to get it to me and, happily, I put it away. That's why we celebrated with such joy.

who will be the best goalkeeper

ONLY eight teams remain and after the drama of the round of 16, expect plenty more on UEFA.com's Matchday Live show in the quarter-finals.
On Tuesday,  we will hear from Paris Saint Germain FC's new playmaker Lucas ahead of full match commentary of their home encounter against FC Barcelona, with updates from FC Bayern München's meeting with Juventus.
Considering the brilliant goalkeepers in action on Tuesday – Manuel Neuer, Víctor Valdés, Gianluigi Buffon and Salvatore Sirigu – we have been debating in the office about who is the greatest UEFA Champions League custodian of all time and why. What do you think?

ARSENAL FC

Arsenal FC are one step away from a 14th consecutive appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage after a narrow first-leg play-off win against Udinese Calcio.

Theo Walcott's fourth-minute goal proved the difference in an open contest in which the Friulani were unfortunate not to score an away goal. The Serie A side will attempt to turn round the tie when the teams reconvene in north-east Italy next Wednesday.
