An honour to compete with Fergie: Mancini

Manchester: Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini says it has been a great honour to battle with rival manager Alex Ferguson over the last three years as the Italian paid tribute to the United chief on Friday.
Ferguson announced on Wednesday that he will walk away from Old Trafford at the end of this season after almost 27 years in charge, and Mancini praised his foe after three years of the pair battling it out for the Premier League and other major honours in England.
"It is his decision," Mancini, who also revealed he sent Ferguson a message following the news, said.
"For me, it has been a great honour and pleasure to compete against Sir Alex for three years. It was a great honour to beat him in Old Trafford and I wish him good luck for his future. I don't know for which reasons (he is retiring).
"He's a top manager but he took this decision and we should respect it.
"This is difficult (to say who is the best manager). Everyone can have his opinion but one manager who stays for 27 years in the same club and won every trophy for 27 years is an incredible situation.
"I don't think there will be another manager like him, In Europe, there are other good managers. I don't know if you can say Sir Alex is the best (ever) but he is the best in the last 27 years."
David Moyes will replace Ferguson at Old Trafford and Mancini dismissed concerns that the change could hinder United's ability to challenge for major trophies.

Anderson’s six years of waste

There was a moment, somewhere around 15 minutes into Manchester United’s insipid performance against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday, when Brazilian midfielder Anderson lofted a 50 yard pass forward. With space to turn on to his favoured left foot, and under no discernible pressure, the player had time to assess the situation before striking the ball a full 30 yards beyond the nearest United forward. After six years at Old Trafford, the only surprise in the moment was Anderson’s fitness to play yet another wasteful pass.
Deployed against Chelsea as the most forward of United’s curious midfield triumvirate, Anderson received the ball 46 times, made 36 passes – 32 successful – and lost possession on eight other occasions. He created no chances, took no shots and scored no goals. Plus ça change.
Impudence aside, Sunday’s wasn’t Anderson’s most slipshod performance in a United shirt. There have been plenty of those. On the day others – notably Ryan Giggs, Antonio Valencia, Tom Cleverley – were just as injurious, but after six years of increasing mediocrity, few can remember when Anderson reached his current low.
This season is the player’s career in a microcosm: just seven starts in the Premier League, 15 in all competitions. Sir Alex Ferguson is increasingly loathe to trust the former international, even on the sporadic occasions when the player is fit.

Fulham to host India's footballers, AIFF unaware

New Delhi: An official word from the AIFF is still awaited but EPL side Fulham FC has already posted on its website that the club would play host to three international friendlies, involving the Indian football team, next month.
The club has put up the dates of the proposed matches India would be playing against Pakistan and Bangladesh at the Craven Cottage ground.
As per the club website, India is playing Bangladesh on June 1, followed by a match against Pakistan on June 4, before taking on Bangladesh on June 8.
However, the All India Football Federation was not aware of such a development.
"No, it (tour) is not yet finalised. (We are) yet to sign the contracts with CMG ( Celebrity Management Group, a Kolkata-based agency)," an AIFF official said on condition of anonymity.
But the English club has not only posted the match dates on its website, but also opened the ticket windows for the matches.
According to the club, matches at Craven Cottage are open to fans and tickets are available online.
The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) had last month said it was in no hurry to finalise their participation in the proposed tri-series.
"We haven't confirmed our participation yet. We're still mulling their proposal," PFF secretary Col Ahmed Yar Khan Lodhi has been quoted as saying in Pakistan media.
CMG executive director Bhaswar Goswami had said, "I can confirm that we have received confirmations from all the three federations for the proposed series."
It may be recalled that a similar visit to the United Kingdom was planned in 2011, but called off after both India and Pakistan pulled out at the last minute.
India had lost to Fulham's first division side 0-2 way back in 2000.

Vidal fires Juventus to 29th Italian title

Ischia, Italy: Arturo Vidal's 10th league goal of the season was enough to secure a 1-0 win over Palermo and help ten-man Juventus to their 29th Serie A title on Sunday.
Juve, however, courted controversy when several players brandished giant shields in the colours of the Italian flag and adorned with '31'.
The number was a reference to Juve's belief that they have won 31 titles, despite being officially stripped of two league crowns several years ago due to their implication in a match-fixing affair.
"We've taken a weight off our sholuders," said goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon.
"After winning the title last season, to finish second would have been a huge disappointment."
Juventus now have a 14-point lead over second-placed Napoli, who, even in the event of a win over Inter Milan later Sunday, can not overtake the Turin giants in the final three games of the season.
Chilean international Vidal had been Juve's top scorer this season, the attacking midfielder scoring nine in the league and 14 in all competitions prior to Sunday's encounter at Juventus Stadium.
When the hosts were awarded a penalty just before the hour after midfielder Massimo Donati fouled Bianconeri striker Mirko Vucinic in the area, Vidal stepped up to beat Stefano Sorrentino in the Palermo goal.
Vidal was cautioned for over-exuberant celebrations but the goal sent Juventus Stadium into raptures.
Juve's title celebrations were tinged by the late sending-off of French midfielder Paul Pogba, who saw red seven minutes from the final whistle after spitting at Salvatore Aronica following a shouting match with the defender.
Juventus, who won the title in 2012 after being unbeaten in the league the entire season, have lost only four times this campaign.
The Turin giants have now secured one of two spots in Serie A which offer direct qualification for next season's Champions League, with Napoli poised to claim the runners-up spot.

Chelsea edge United to close on Champions League

Manchester: Juan Mata's dramatic late goal earned Chelsea an unlikely three points in their quest for Champions League football as they secured a 1-0 victory at Premier League champions Manchester United on Sunday.
The Chelsea midfielder struck at the end of a rare flowing move in the 87th minute -- Ramires' back-heel finding Oscar, whose pass to Mata allowed his team-mate to drive the ball home via a deflection -- to lift his team into third place in the table.
To add to United's dissatisfaction, substitute Wayne Rooney claimed he had been brought down just outside the Chelsea penalty area in the seconds leading up to the goal.
It was a rare moment of memorable attacking play in an otherwise forgettable contest and a goal that ensured an ill-tempered conclusion to the game, with United defender Rafael da Silva shown a straight red card two minutes later.
The Brazilian hacked at the ankles of countryman David Luiz as the pair tussled for the ball near the corner flag, and players from both sides engaged in a subsequent shoving match.
There had been pre-game speculation over whether United manager Alex Ferguson would shake the hand of opposite number Rafael Benitez, with whom he has a frosty relationship, but the veteran manager went out of his way to seek out the Chelsea interim coach on his way to the bench.
Ferguson had taken the controversial step of resting key personnel and handed starts to reserve goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard and midfielders Anderson and Tom Cleverley.
It was a selection that will have raised eyebrows at Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, the clubs in direct competition with Chelsea for Champions League places.
United's performance will have done little, therefore, to allay fears that this is a United side that is far from firing on all cylinders.
After just three minutes, Mata picked out Demba Ba at the far post and the forward heading just wide while off-balance.
The Senegalese striker then miskicked horribly from a promising position, the chance created after Lindegaard had flapped at a Mata cross unconvincingly.
Errors by Patrice Evra and Phil Jones then handed the visitors two more promising openings.

Messi returns to put Barca on brink of title

Lionel Messi came off the substitute's bench to score twice and help Barcelona to a 4-2 win at home to Real Betis that moved them to within striking distance of the La Liga title on Sunday.
The World Player of the Year had missed Barca's humiliating Champions League semi-final exit to Bayern Munich on Wednesday as he recovered from a hamstring problem, but came on in the 56th minute at 2-2 to score the goals that sealed the victory.
The Argentine's 16th double of the season took his league tally to 46, just four short of last season's record breaking total.
Barca have 88 points with four games left to play, 11 ahead of second-placed Real Madrid who triumphed 4-3 at home to Real Valladolid on Saturday.
Tito Vilanova's side, who need two more points to secure a fourth league title in five years, could claim the trophy on Wednesday if Real fail to win at home to Malaga.
"We have to think we will need two more points because Madrid will probably collect all theirs," Vilanova told a news conference.
Pep Guardiola's former assistant went on to defend his management of Messi's injury after not using him against Bayern during the week.
"If we hadn't managed it this way he might not have made the Betis game to help us," he said. "He lacks fitness because he hasn't trained much in the last month and a half."
CASUAL DEFENDING
Barca were behind from the second minute after some casual defending allowed Dorlan Pabon to burst through and fire past Jose Manuel Pinto, who was deputising for the injured Victor Valdes.
The hosts reacted quickly with Andres Iniesta dancing to the byline and crossing for Alexis Sanchez to bullet in a diving header in the ninth.
Betis are a team who like to attack opponents and as a result chances fell to either side in an open encounter.
An out-of-sorts David Villa could have had a hat-trick before halftime, his worst miss a volley over after wonderful approach play from Andres Iniesta and Xavi, while Pinto denied Salva Sevilla from close range.
Barca's Cristian Tello lashed a shot against the crossbar which bounced down on the line, and almost immediately Betis were ahead again when Ruben Perez thundered a 30-metre shot into the top corner in the 43rd.
